Morning vs Evening Skincare Routine: What's the Difference?

Why the time of day matters

During the day, skin focuses on defence — protecting from UV radiation, pollution, and free radicals. At night, it shifts into repair mode: cell turnover accelerates, collagen synthesis increases, and the skin is more receptive to treatment ingredients.

The morning routine: protect and defend

Step 1: Cleanser (optional)

Many people — especially those with dry or sensitive skin — can skip or use just water in the morning. Over-cleansing strips natural oils the skin produced overnight.

Step 2: Hydrating serum

A lightweight serum with Hyaluronic Acid, Niacinamide, or Vitamin C. Vitamin C is best used in the morning — it boosts SPF efficacy and fights free radicals.

Step 3: Moisturiser

A lighter formula — gel or lotion consistency. Seals in the serum and provides a smooth base for SPF.

Step 4: SPF — non-negotiable

The single most important step. SPF 30 minimum, SPF 50 preferred. This prevents premature ageing, pigmentation, and UV damage more effectively than any other product.

☀️

SPF must be the last skincare step before makeup. Applying anything on top dilutes its protection. Reapply every two hours in direct sun.

The evening routine: repair and treat

Step 1: Double cleanse

Start with an oil-based cleanser or micellar water to dissolve SPF and makeup, then follow with a gentle water-based cleanser. A clean base is essential for treatments to absorb properly.

Step 2: Treatment serum or active

This is when you use your actives — retinol, AHAs, BHAs, peptides. At night, skin is more receptive and there's no UV interference. Never use retinol or AHAs in the morning.

Step 3: Richer moisturiser or night cream

Use a more occlusive formula at night — your skin won't produce the same natural oil barrier while you sleep, and a richer moisturiser prevents transepidermal water loss.

Common mistakes

  • Using retinol in the morning — it degrades in UV and increases sun sensitivity
  • Skipping SPF because "it's cloudy" — UVA penetrates cloud and glass
  • Using the same lightweight moisturiser morning and evening — fine for oily skin, inadequate for dry skin overnight
  • Applying actives without moisturising first if you have sensitive skin
