What moisturiser actually does
It is not food for your skin and it does not feed anything. It does two mechanical things: it puts a small amount of water back, and it slows the rate at which water leaves. That is it.
Your skin loses water all day, through a process with the unglamorous name of transepidermal water loss. Wind, heating, air conditioning, hot showers and shaving all speed it up. Moisturiser slows it down.
Why oily skin needs it too
This is the part that stops most men, and it comes from one honest confusion: if my face is already greasy, why add more?
Because oil is not water. Skin can be slick on the surface and short of water underneath at the same time. That combination is behind a lot of what men complain about: shine by midday, rough patches that will not go, flaking that appears right after washing.
There is also a feedback loop. Strip the skin with a harsh wash and leave it bare, and it often responds by producing more oil. Men who complain that nothing controls their shine are frequently doing exactly this twice a day.
How to choose one in under a minute
Forget the ingredient lists for now. There is really one decision:
- Oily or shiny skin. A gel or a light lotion. It should disappear in seconds and leave nothing behind.
- Dry or tight skin. A cream. Thicker, slower to absorb, worth it.
- Shaving most days. Either of the above, but unscented. Fragrance on freshly shaved skin is the single most common cause of that stinging you assumed was normal.
Price has very little to do with it above the supermarket shelf. A fifteen pound cream and a sixty pound cream usually do the same job.
The test that settles it
Wash your face, dry it, and put nothing on. Wait thirty minutes.
If your skin feels tight, itchy or looks dull, it needs moisturiser. If it feels completely comfortable, you can get away with less, though you still want it after shaving. Most men who run this test are surprised.
What this does not fix
Moisturiser will not clear acne, will not remove marks and will not undo sun damage. It makes skin comfortable and keeps the barrier intact, which is the foundation everything else sits on. Expecting more than that is how people conclude skincare does not work.
If you are starting from nothing, the three product routine for men covers where moisturiser sits in the order and what goes either side of it.
Still not sure what your skin is doing
Oily or dehydrated is genuinely hard to call in a mirror, and the two need opposite products. Skinalyze AI reads a selfie and tells you which one you are looking at, so the choice stops being a guess.
