Why this matters more than it sounds
Both look like small red bumps on the lower face. Both are itchy. Both get worse when you pick at them. And the usual response, reaching for the strongest acne wash in the shop, actively makes one of them worse.
Three questions
1. Where are they?
Razor bumps appear only on shaved skin: jaw, neck, upper lip, the line where you stop shaving. If the bumps are also on your forehead, your nose or your back, shaving is not the explanation.
2. When did they appear?
Razor bumps show up within a day or two of shaving and fade if you leave the area alone for a week. Acne comes and goes on a slower cycle that has nothing to do with when you last shaved.
3. What is in the middle?
Many razor bumps have a visible hair, sometimes curled back into the skin. Acne does not. This one is the clearest signal, and it needs good light rather than a glance.
If it is razor bumps
The cause is a hair that was cut below the skin surface and grew back into the wall of the follicle. Everything that helps works by reducing that.
- Shave in the direction the hair grows, not against it. You get a slightly less close shave and far fewer bumps.
- Fewer blades, less stretching. Multi blade razors lift the hair and cut it below the surface, which is precisely the mechanism.
- Let the area rest. Two or three days without shaving does more than any product.
- Skip the alcohol aftershave. It stings, which feels like it is working, and it dries skin that is already irritated.
If it is acne
Treatment is about the pore, not the hair. A gentle cleanser, a product with salicylic acid two or three evenings a week, and patience measured in weeks. Scrubbing harder is the most common mistake and it reliably makes things worse.
Adult acne works differently from teenage acne, which is why the products you used at sixteen often do nothing now.
If it is both
It often is. The approach then is to treat the acne on the whole face and change the shaving separately, rather than attacking the jaw with everything at once.
When to see someone
Deep painful lumps that last weeks, bumps that leave dark marks or raised scars, or anything spreading fast, are worth a doctor rather than a shelf. Skinalyze AI is educational and does not diagnose.
If you still cannot tell
This is a genuinely hard call in a bathroom mirror, and the two need opposite products. Skinalyze AI reads a selfie and separates irritation from breakouts, so you stop treating one as the other.
